Everything You Need to Know
Your Complete Guide to AC Repair
Common AC Problems We Fix
Most air conditioning failures come down to a handful of culprits, and the symptom usually points to the cause. A system that runs but blows warm air typically means low refrigerant from a leak, a failing compressor, or a frozen evaporator coil. Short cycling — switching on and off every few minutes — is often a bad capacitor, a faulty thermostat, or an oversized system. Weak airflow traces back to a clogged filter, a dirty blower wheel, or a duct issue, while grinding, squealing, or buzzing signals a worn motor bearing, a loose belt, or an electrical fault. Water pooling by the indoor unit means a clogged condensate drain. We diagnose the true root cause with a full inspection — refrigerant charge, electrical components, airflow, and controls — so the same problem doesn't come back next week.
What to Expect: Our AC Repair Process
When you call Shalom Heating & Air, a licensed technician arrives on time and begins with a complete diagnostic of your whole system, not just the obvious symptom. We test refrigerant pressures, inspect the compressor, capacitor, and contactor, check airflow and the coils, and verify the thermostat and safety controls. Once we've found the fault, you get a clear, flat-rate quote up front and approve the price before any work starts — no hourly surprises. Because our trucks carry the most common parts, most repairs are finished the same visit. Before we leave, we test the system end to end — confirming supply temperatures, pressures, and proper cycling — so you know it's genuinely fixed.
How Much Does AC Repair Cost?
AC repair cost depends on the part and the labor involved. Minor repairs like a capacitor, contactor, or thermostat sit at the lower end, while compressor replacement, refrigerant leak repair, and coil work cost more due to parts and time. The age and refrigerant type of your system matter too — older units running phased-out R-22 can be pricier to recharge. Instead of an open-ended hourly rate, we give you a flat-rate quote after the diagnostic, so you know the full cost before we begin, and financing is available on larger repairs and installations to keep it affordable.
AC Repair vs. Replacement: How to Decide
Not every AC problem is worth fixing, and we'll tell you honestly which way to go. Repair usually makes sense when your system is under about 10 years old and the fix costs less than roughly a third of a new unit. Replacement is often the smarter long-term choice when the system is 12 or more years old, still uses R-22 refrigerant, needs a new compressor, or has required repeated repairs. A newer high-efficiency system can also lower your energy bills enough to offset much of the cost over time. We lay out the real numbers — repair cost, expected lifespan, and efficiency savings — so you can decide with full information, not a sales pitch.
Emergency & Same-Day AC Repair
A broken air conditioner during a Southern California heat wave can't always wait. That's why we offer same-day and emergency AC repair across our service area, getting a technician to your home or business quickly to restore cooling. Whether it's a no-cool call at the peak of summer or a system that quit overnight, call early in the day for the best chance at a same-day appointment.
Brands & Systems We Service
Our technicians repair and install every major HVAC brand — including Carrier, Trane, Lennox, Goodman, Rheem, Daikin, and American Standard — along with Mitsubishi and other ductless mini-split systems. From central air conditioners and heat pumps to ductless units, we service residential and light commercial systems of all makes and ages, so whatever you have installed, we can keep it running cool.
When to Repair vs. Replace Your AC
| Your Situation | Best Move |
|---|---|
| AC under ~10 years with a minor part failure | Repair |
| 12+ years old or uses R-22 refrigerant | Replace |
| Repair costs less than a third of a new system | Repair |
| Failed compressor or repeated breakdowns | Replace |
| Rising energy bills, want higher efficiency | Replace · rebates may apply |
